Appearance:
Sparrow isn't short. She isn't overly pale, either, and has the typical Irish fire red hair. She has complete heterochromia iridis, with one eye being a slate blue while the other is a darker green. From a distance, people mistake her eyes for being straight up green or straight up blue. She is toned for the most part, but since she loves food, she is about average build. She has a more catlike face, though none of the grace of a cat.
History:
Sparrow once had a birth name she went by. She threw it a away when she finished high school, wanting nothing more than to be a different person. She only uses her legal name in things like paperwork, or when she is comfortable enough with a person to let them know what it is. She's done a lot in her life that has shaped her into who she is. Despite the ups and down, she can still the positive in everything. School was always hell for her, since she never felt included, and even the people who considered her a friend were kept at a distance where they didn't feel pushed away. She never considered them friends, but humored them instead. She learned at a young age that you could easily manipulate people into thinking they were important in your life while revealing as little about yourself as possible. Her parents were always around, but being physically there and being emotionally there were two different things entirely. She has an older sister who cut the family out of her life as soon as she graduated high school. Sparrow hears from her occasionally, though she doesn't tell her parents about it.
Born to a German father and an Irish mother, Sparrow looks like a perfect blend between the two of them. She has hair that looks like fire, and a right blue eye and a green left eye. She would get teased as a child for her eyes, which she never really overcame. Being the second child of a couple that moved around a lot, she grew up in a very multicultural environment, appreciating each country she went to as a new and exciting learning experience. Her family, despite being raised on German traditions, didn't really practice any faith. They left it up to their own children to decide what they wanted to do with their lives when it came to spirituality. She has always been close with her older sister, and they got into a lot of trouble whenever they ran away from their parents. These are some of her fondest memories of her childhood.
As a child, Sparrow had a harder time making friends. She was teased for her eyes, teased for her hair, and teased for her German accent. She tried her best to get rid of the accent, and now speaks without even a hint of it except when tired. When she was nine, she went to a birthday party for a girl she hardly knew. The children there thought it would be funny to lock her up in a basement as a joke. Since it was a smaller basement, she soon became afraid of the walls closing in on her. The door opened, which gave her some hope, until the clown hired for the party came into view. The stress of being locked up and the shock of seeing who her rescuer was sent her off the edge. She would spend the next few weeks holed up in her room. During this time she developed night terrors. Through a lot of counseling well into her high school years, she managed to make dealing with them manageable. Her fear of ferrets came about in this time from a particularly bad nightmare. During a trip to the Midwest, she became terribly lost in an open field. The open space with no landmark scared her rather badly, and the fear carries over to this day. Since she has a combined fear of small spaces and big places, she has never been able to set foot on an airplane or a boat again, which ended her intercontinental traveling days.
Since she mostly home-schooled, a traditional school setting was absolutely terrifying for her. She had become even more withdrawn when her parents decided to settle down in Washington state. She had never really been around kids her age, and with her sister being two grades ahead, she didn't really have anyone to talk to. At fifteen she started formally attending high school. The people who called her friend were still kept at a distance. She was very good at pretending she cared about them, wanting nothing more than to be left alone in her thoughts. After hanging out one night with her 'friends', she was attacked by a girl who had bullied her from day one. At the age of seventeen, she was beaten badly enough where she required a few weeks of hospitalization. When she was released, she went right back into therapy to deal with her new anxieties which left her feeling emotionally crippled and incapable of dealing with daily life in a constructive way. She also noticed that she now was super sensitive to touch, and her sense of smell had become stronger. Every time someone decided to touch her, it left her feeling light headed, dizzy, and tingling in a bad way. She then did her best to avoid these situations, becoming withdrawn to such a degree where she started hiding out more and more in her room. It became her sanctuary. Her heightened sense of smell didn't help. She couldn't stand the smell of strong odors that some people had about them, and sickly sweet smells were especially noticeable and made her feel sick. Her time in the hospital made her terrified of sick people, the older people in her life insisting that she would catch the illness just from touching an unhealthy person. She came into the habit of washing her hands obsessively, and soon she started exhibiting some more signs of OCD. They were mostly mental tics, such as counting numbers till the became 'comfortable' to her, or doing small tasks repetitively. After failed medication attempts, the therapist advised that she have home visits for therapy, which was fine with Sparrow.
Sparrow's sister graduating left her without anyone to run to when the bullying escalated during high school. Having her sister cut them out of her life didn't help matters. She fell into a deep depression coupled with a severe case of PTSD. She somehow managed to keep her grades up so she could graduate on time. The day she graduate was like a weight lifting off of her shoulders, and she cried for the first time in a long time out of happiness. That summer she took her father up on the offer of taking a survival class so she could learn to be self-sufficient. They had gone hiking on and off during her high school years, the few times she didn't have to worry about being bullied for being different. The woods made her feel at home, though bad experiences with bugs like wasps and beetles left her rather terrified of having insects land on her. She almost failed the survival classes due to this fear of hers. She went on several more hikes with her father that summer, camping out overnight in may different places, and watching the stars at night without light pollution. This time in the woods helped her deal with her issues more than any therapy session ever had. She felt understood by the woods, and went on every hike her father asked her to go on.
That fall, at the age if eighteen, she started attending a community college so she could attain an AAS. Science was a passion of hers since childhood, even though she wanted to get into the medical field at one time, she chose to go a different route so she would have to deal less with people. She took classes on gun safety during her breaks, even convincing one of the few friends she made during her new school experience to take them with her. The friends she actually considers friends were all from different departments, and they all shared one thing in common: their fear of people who saw them as different. She's far less reserved with them than strangers, showing them a side of herself she hadn't known she could still have. It was during this time she decided to try and see if she was even capable of sharing an intimate experience with someone else. A girl who would become her best friend was her first and only sexual experience at the age of twenty. She felt no enjoyment out of it, and afterwards they spoke in depth about it. Even though Sparrow thoroughly enjoyed being close to someone, she had no inclination towards sexual activity. She finally became used to the fact that she was asexual. Her best friend went on later during school to marrying a young man who Sparrow thought was perfect for her friend, though she still had lingering feelings for her best friend. These feelings were never acted on, and she soon graduated with her AAS at the age of twenty-one.
A run in the bully at a grocery store a year later reminded her of the beating she received by this person, and it her left her paranoid and scared. Instead of taking a job she was offered, she ran. He parents owned several small properties around the country for vacation purposes, so she moved to the one furthest away first. Using the internet, she kept in contact with her friends, letting them know where she was and how she was doing. Since she ran, she no longer attended counseling sessions, so her depression and PTSD started to get worse. She took whatever small job she could get to supplement the money her parents sent her, trying her best to get used to being around people she didn't know. This didn't always work out, and she would go on to the next place. Her friends would suggest places for her to see along the way, and she happily obliged, loving exploring the fast country. Forests were always her favorites. At one stop she adopted a small, orphaned kitten who grew to be her only physically there companion on her road to hiding. This cat grew to be a rather fluffy and sweet, and Sparrow named her Cream. When she finally decided on settling down in one place, after to years of traveling, it was back in the state she had fallen in love with when they first settle down in the States. It was a decent sized cabin near a nature preserve with plenty of hiking trails for her to explore whenever she wasn't working. Cream had become rather content with staying indoors, so she no longer joined Sparrow on her excursions.
Since Sparrow had taken gun safety classes and had a permit to own firearms, she bought herself a rifle to keep herself safe as she hiked. She has yet to use it in self defense, though she made sure to use the scope in case she heard a sound far off that didn't sound like a small animal. She started carrying a hunting knife with her in order to mark trees that she would then use as quick guides home. The knife has seen more action than the rifle has, and she makes sure they both stay in good condition.
It was a quiet life in the woods. She had to rig some things in order to get internet out there, but she was lucky enough that it was close enough to the roads and other houses so she could make use of the sewer lines and have electricity. Her neighbors never really bothered her, being quiet and keeping to themselves as well. The few times that her neighbors did come to her was to warn her of predators, or possible human predators. Thankfully, she was never in real danger. She has cordial acquaintanceship with the people in town. She will talk to them when they approach her, such as when she works or goes shopping. She's made sure not to become too friendly with anyone in town, but will go to town celebrations so no one will think of her as a pariah.
Panic attacks became a thing of the past for her, and in this solitude, her anxieties slowly started melting away. Her friends would tell her they were proud of her for coming so far. Slowly, she also became used to spending a bit more time with strangers, and her reserved nature became more open and friendly. Since she became more comfortable with other people, she started showing signs of her temper, something she had been in really good control of since she entered high school. There were few times where she exhibited signs of this temper, lashing out at objects, and one time, another person. She also started becoming more and more picky about the foods she would eat and the people she would actually associate with. She taught herself to learn to listen carefully for changes in a persons tone and the words they use since she is horrible at reading body language. If the person starts teasing or joking with her, it becomes an immediate red flag until they either drop it, or if they continue, she leaves.
To this day, she loves her quiet life and the time she gets to spend in the woods. This was a veritable paradise for her, an escape from the life she perceived as utter hell. Her parents miss her dearly, and when they visit, they let her know this. Her sister has since completely fallen out of contact with her, and she misses her dearly, but keeps a respectful distance from her since she figures her sister needs to find out for herself what she wanted in life. As of her twenty-fourth birthday, she has started working at a library, sparking her love for books and anything that could be read and learned from. Hiking is still a form of therapy for her, and she will discuss in depth anything that has to do with being in nature with her friends and her neighbors.
Personality:
Sparrow was once a very reserved and emotionally distant person. She does still keep strangers at a distance until she gets to know them. With the people she considers real friends she is the exact opposite. Her emotions shine through in ever interaction with them. She laughs, cries, shares her fears and dreams, and listens as they tell her theirs. When she's in happy mood, she sings and dances around. Her cat is the only witness to these times, and since cats can't talk, it is a secret between them. Cream is one of her best friends, despite being a cat. She speaks not only with her words, but with her entire body, especially her hands. She also finds the smell of people she likes a lot more pleasant than strangers, and if her friends smell different, she is quick to ask them about it. Most of the time, though, they only interact in chat-rooms or over Skype. This is fine with her, and she does not hold back her happiness when she does talk to them.
She has an incredible sense of loyalty as well. If you are in her circle of trust, you can bet the will be the person who will always advocate for you. When she does decide to do things like hug, she does so only with her friends and family since she trusts them, even if it does leave her dizzy.
The way she interacts with people also depends on her mood and how she perceives the them. Happy mood are always an indicator of trust, whereas bad moods show she wants nothing more than to get away and unwind. Strangers get her wary mood until she knows how she should feel around them. She is more physically open with friends and will show open emotions. With strangers she acts more modest and demure, making sure to look down or away often to seem either disinterested and shy.
She does have a temper. Her gestures are more dramatic when she's angry, and make it seem like she is throwing a temper tantrum. If provoked enough, she will lash out at the nearest object or person. To know when she is truly, truly angry, she goes quiet and smiles. That's when you know she will never give you a second chance at getting to know her.
Sparrow doesn't see herself as a pretty girl, preferring to think of herself as average. She thinks her smile is weird and crooked, her feet are too big, and she doesn't know what to do with her hair. Her negative self-image comes from being teased all her life for her appearance. There are times when she wants to dye her hair and wear contacts, but she sees no point in it since it wouldn't make her feel any less average. She wears blues and greens because it makes her seem more demure and modest, so she feels like she stands out less.
Her biggest motivation in life is living in a quiet place, preferably somewhere with water. She enjoys cooking, baking, hiking, and reading. Spending time with her cat keeps her going, since cats don't demand as much attention as dogs do. Through her science classes, she learned a lot about animals, and loves them, but could never get herself to be a veterinarian. She keeps up her language skills by Skyping with her parents. She would love to do something more with her science degree, and it tempted to become a park ranger or a naturalist so she can combine her love of science and hiking.
She is not religious or holds any beliefs in the afterlife. She finds the thought of ghosts and spirits quaint. She doesn't judge anyone on their personal beliefs as long as they respect her lack of belief and don't force theirs on her. Sparrow rather know than waste time in believing, which is why science is a comfort.
When it comes to sex, her personality is completely indifferent. She has no interest in it, and she lets the person trying to initiate it know. That does not mean she doesn't like being kissed or being cuddled. It has to be on her terms due to her sensitivity to smells and touch. She does want to be in a relationship, but doesn't know how to go about it.
She is an open-minded person, though if you belittle her, she will lash out. She's a feminist that doesn't hate men, believes war is misguided, and thinks pro-life people are just idiots who need an education on women's health and rights. She is also big on LGBTQIA rights. She will not force her opinions on anyone, but she will educate them on it, even if their beliefs remain the same. If someone forced their opinion on her, she will reply in a clipping manner to end the conversation.
She has depression and PTSD, which comes out in several ways. She has OCD tendencies, though they are more mental repetition than outward behaviors. When anxious enough, she will start obsessively cleaning things until she feels 'safe' in her environment. Wringing her hands is when she feels threatened, and picking at her skin is when she feels that people are judging her outward appearance. She can't tell if a person is joking or being serious when they tease her, so unless specifically stated, she will get nervous around that person. If she feels bullied, she will withdraw for a while. Her friends can usually get her out of these funks.
She can panic easily when it comes to things that outright scare her. During panic attacks, no one can touch her unless they want her to physically lash out at them. Her panic attacks can last anywhere from a few minutes to hours. She goes into flight mode as soon as the smallest hint of an attack comes about. If she can't run, she goes into complete fight mode and can deal quite a bit of damage in this mode.
FEARS |
- Open Spaces She got lost as a kid in a wide open space, and the lack of landmarks scared her. She also can't handle intercontinental flight for this reason, since it's both enclose and wide open at the same time./li>
- Enclosed Spaces Was locked in a small basement as a child at a birthday party for hours. Goes into instant panic mode is she is forced into a small space like elevators.
- Clowns Bad birthday party experience. The clown was only trying to help her out of the basement, but in her panicked state, she mistook the help and became terrified.
- Ferrets A terrifying nightmare ruined his creatures for her during her night terror phase. She calls them tubed shaped rats.
- Sick People She was taught that touch would transfer the illness. Her hospital stay reinforced these ideas. If someone is sick around her, she will not interact with them until they are healthy. She is less wary of terminal diseases, because she does feel bad for the person being in so much pain.
- Bugs Due to her sensitive touch, she can't handle them crawling over her. A wasp sting at the age of sixteen reinforced this fear. Wears a ton of bug spray in the woods.
- Afraid of people teasing her She's been teased for her two different colored eyes and her appearance in general. Teasing puts her into a very tense mode.
|
WEAKNESSES |
- Reading People She can't read body language, so she has to rely on other things to tell her what someones intentions are.
- Her Appearance Since she was bullied, she's super anxious about teasing since she can't tell if it's a joke or not. She can't handle compliments by strangers.
- Compassion towards animals She hates it when animals get hurt, and will let herself get hurt to save them. This is due to one of her best friends being a cat. Will not hesitate to defend herself from animals attacks, though.
|
ABILITIES |
- Survival Sparrow has wilderness skill, knows how to use a gun, and is good about reading her environment. She's always good about exploring the places she's in, leaving no stone unturned.
- Language She is bilingual, fluent in German and English.
- Good Ears She can tell people's intentions by listening carefully to their tone and words. Her sense of smell also helps since people who lie smell differently than truthful people.
- Sense of Touch/Feeling and Smell Since she has a sensitive sense of touch, she is more likely to feel electro magnetic pulses, and feel when machinery is on. Temperature fluctuations are also very noticeable to her. Her heightened smell makes her more prone to react to strong smells, and can identify a lot of things by smell alone.
